Create Your Own Fashion Uniform

Hello again, everyone!

I want to talk to you guys about an idea that’s been bouncing around my head lately:  uniforms. I never went to a school where I was required to wear one, but I was always fascinated when I saw schools that had them. I kept wondering how much simpler my life would be if I just had one solid outfit that I could wear every day and no one would judge me. Now that I’m in college and any hope of a school enforced uniform has come and gone, I’ve decided to take it upon myself to create my own personal style uniform. Though I’m not wearing the same exact outfit every day, the principle is the same:  find something that’s flattering, repeat daily.

I love a good monochrome high-waisted short action.

My two loves: crop tops and pencil skirts.

For example, my fashion uniform focuses mainly on proportions. I love anything high-waisted or cropped! So, I always wear high waisted bottoms and either a crop-top or a tucked-in shirt. It’s honestly that simple! I love having a leggy appearance so any outfit that gives me that is a winner. Every pair of bottoms I own are high-rise so even though they may vary in color or detail, I always get the shape that I love. Even when I wear dresses I kept the tenets of my uniform at heart by wearing dresses that nip in at the waist or belting them a tad higher than my natural waist.

The most important thing about this whole process is finding an outfit formula that makes you feel your best. Here are some ways to help you do that.

  • Take all of your clothes out of your closets and drawers. Take note of similar items you have. Maybe you only own skirts or maybe you only like dark wash jeans. Duplicates play an important role in helping you figure out what things you’re drawn to.
  • Create an image board of styles you covet. Perhaps outfits you find pleasing all have something in common. Find out what it is and see if you can translate that to your own closet.
  • Throw away all clothes that are just taking space in your closet that no longer fit you or your aesthetic (this is the hard part, I know!).
  • Go shopping! This is the fun part. See if after getting rid of some items there are areas in your closet that are lacking. If you realize you don’t have any coats in a style you like or shoes that match your new wardrobe, go forth and shop! Just keep in mind the look you’re going for so you don’t get too carried away.

And that’s it! Uniforms don’t have to be drab. In fact, when done correctly, a personal uniform is downright inspiring. If you don’t believe me, look to Karl Lagerfeld or Anna Wintour who both have distinctive style uniforms while staying at the top of the fashion chain.
