How to be Corporate Chic

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a workaholic. I believe and enjoy being (mostly – I do ask for help from mom and dad sometimes) financially independent and achieving my goals. It’s just how I was raised and it’s the lifestyle that I chose. But one huge problem for me was going from working part-time to full-time. That’s right, folks. I am a bonafide M-F 9AM – 5PM weekend warrior. Although I love my new internship, I often find myself feeling exhausted and apathetic toward the things that I usually enjoyed as part of my daily routine. That is, blogging, working out, reading, and spending time with my friends. These days I’ll come home, take off my pants, eat something (usually unhealthy), watch

That’s right, folks. I am a bona fide 9-5 weekend warrior. Although I love my new internship, I often find myself feeling exhausted and apathetic toward the things that I usually enjoyed as part of my daily routine. That is, blogging, working out, reading, and spending time with my friends. These days I’ll come home, take off my pants, eat something (usually unhealthy), watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and pass out around 10 after a single glass of red wine.

However, on this particular day I felt the power of a great outfit (channelling Elle Woods rn) and it literally gave me life. Side note: this may have been the most stereotypically white girl thing that I’ve ever said, revel in this. It’s weird, but seriously, when you look good, you feel good.

Now, when I first got this job I thought I would have to buy out the Gap or Banana Republic. Don’t get me wrong, those stores aren’t bad by any means, but they aren’t my style and they sure as hell aren’t my price range. Instead of spending $30 on a shirt, I took to the sales racks of my favorite stores and, my all-time favorite, TJ Maxx.

Here’s a lil’ play-by-play of what I was werkin’ today.

Marshall's: $12
Marshall’s: $12
TJ Maxx: $20
TJ Maxx: $20
Urban Outfitters: $15 (On sale)
Urban Outfitters: $15 (on sale)
Michael Kors: $100 (purchased at Saks Off 5th)
Michael Kors: $100 (Saks Off 5th)

So, what have we learned today? Business casual does not mean boring or expensive! You can pull off a great look inexpensively. I realize that my watch costs way more than my actual outfit, but I’d say that a watch is one of those items that, as a young professional, you must splurge on.
