Building Your Essential Skincare Routine

What’s up you guys?

Alright, today we’re going to talk about what I consider to be one of the most important everyday tasks that you should remember to do: go through a developed skincare routine that suits the needs of your skin. In all my years of acne troubles, and dull oily skin, I have found that the best way to ultimately improve the appearance of your skin is to be consistent with your routine. If you want to see real results and end up with fresh, glowing skin you have to make sure you perform this routine twice a day: when you wake up, and when you go to bed. Being consistent with your skincare routine will eventually result in beautiful skin and prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging later on in life.

I have also come to realize that you should switch some of your products out during nighttime, and have sort of two separate skin care routines. Now, this may seem a little excessive to most people, but hear me out. While we’re sleeping, our skin is essentially renewing itself; new cells are growing and replacing the old ones. This means that our skin is more prone to absorb nutrients, so at this time we can apply thicker, creamier products that will seep into our skin during sleep a way they couldn’t during the day. It’s also important to get a great night’s rest, the longer and deeper you sleep, the more your skin is going to absorb those hydrating and replenishing products. By morning, you’ll awake looking instantly refreshed and healthier.

skin care routine Follow this 9 step routine using these 13 products to achieve instantly refreshed, clear, glowing skin:

1. Cleanse.

This step is essential because it clears the layer of oil, grime, makeup if applied, and preps your skin for your other skincare products. Try picking a product that suits your skin type and is targeted to your issue (acne, dehydration, anti aging, etc.) and your skin type. If you have oily skin, try a gel formula; if your skin is dry or dehydrated pick a creamier formula.

Morning: Because I have large pores and want to diminish their appearance during the day, I use Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser with my Clarisonic Mia. The Kiehl’s cleanser is formulated with Amazonian White Clay and Diatomaceous Earth particles to gently remove oil, dirt and toxins that clog pores and ultimately diminish their size while softening my skin. My Clarisonic is crucial in getting a deep clean by cleansing six times more deeply than hands alone. The Clarisonic also helps reduce the size of my pores as well as making it easier for my following skincare products to absorb better. What’s also really cool about the Clarisonic is that the brush head is bacteria resistant, meaning you can simply rinse it and reuse without worrying about the brush getting contaminated and causing more acne.

Night: I also have quite sensitive, acne prone skin. So at nighttime, I switch to a cleanser with ingredients that slay blemishes and prevent new ones from popping up. While I’m sleeping, my skin sucks up these ingredients and I wake up with clear skin. The one I’m currently loving is Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Gel Cleanser. It has an awesome cooling sensation and is formulated with salicylic acid and has gentle cleansers that remove oil without being too drying. I also use the Clarisonic with this.

2. Tone.

Toning helps remove and dirt or residue, particularly in our pores that cleansing may have missed. This helps reduce their size as well as promote acne-free skin and prevent excess oil.

Morning and Night: I have quite sensitive skin and find that most toners are too drying for my skin. However, I have found a very gentle, completely natural toner that actually feels quite refreshing. The Lush Tea Tree Water is my holy grail product when it comes to toners! This toner is formulated with tea tree, an ingredient that reduces redness and and clears excess oil. It’s also formulated with grapefruit and juniper berry to prevent blemishes and balance skin tone.

3. Eye Cream.

It’s vital that you target the skin around your eye with a gentle, hydrating cream as this is one of the most sensitive areas of our faces. Keeping this area hydrated will reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness and ultimately contribute to a brightened complexion.

Morning and Night: To keep my dark circles at bay, I use Roc Retinal Correxion Eye Cream. This product is incredibly thin and non greasy, which is great for reducing puffiness and darkness around the delicate eye area. It’s also formulated with Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin A that has been shown to rapidly increase cell turnover, which aids in reducing fine lines and preventing wrinkles.

4. Spot Treat.

If you have any blemishes on your face, this step is essential to reducing the size of them, cleaning redness and ultimately vanquishing those nasty pimples. Its also important to note that its incredibly effective to apply these concentrated products at night because your skin will absorb the acne reducing ingredients incredibly well during sleep.

Morning and Night: The best spot treatment I have ever used is the Murad Acne Spot Treatment. This sucker is formulated with 3% Sulfur, an anti-inflammatory  ingredient that reduces redness and promotes natural healing.

5. Serum.

This step is probably the most important because serums are specially designed with tons of vitamins and crucial ingredients that renew the skin, prevent wrinkles and signs of aging, and most importantly, hydrate. There’s a common misconception that moisturizer alone will hydrate your skin, and this is untrue. Moisturizers will remedy dry, chapped skin on the outer surfaces of our skin and are designed to hold in our skin’s moisture, not necessarily hydrate our skin. Serums, when applied before moisturizer will drastically hydrate your skin, as they are specially formulated with smaller molecules that easily penetrate the skin and deliver potent ingredients like vitamins and antioxidants to the deepest layers of the skin. Essentially, serums provide essential ingredients that replenish and weightlessly hydrate dull skin below the surface layer.

Morning: In the morning, I like to apply the Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum before I apply moisturizer. Like the eye cream, this product is specially formulated with Retinol and other active ingredients that tighten the skin, brighten and even skin tone, as well as hydrate.

Night: At night I use probably my favorite skin care product of all time. Hands down, this product is the most amazing thing I have ever used. After one use before bed, you see a noticeable difference in the morning and truly look refreshed and all around brighter. This is the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. This product is slightly oily in texture and almost instantly absorbs into your skin by working with our skin’s natural nocturnal activity, when it’s most receptive to repairing itself to daily aggressors, to drastically restore the skin. What’s also awesome is that it’s 99.8% naturally derived, as well as paraben free, making it the perfect oil for facial skin.

6. Moisturizer.

As stated before, though a moisturizer will not provide our skin essential hydration, it will relieve dry, flaky skin on the surface as well as aid in retaining the skin’s natural moisture.

Morning: Because I have oily skin and enlarged pores I use a combination of Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Moisturizer and Rare Earth Pore Minimizing Lotion. The Blue Herbal Moisturizer is formulated with salicylic acid to prevent acne and provides lightweight moisture for oily skin types; I use this all over my face to treat and prevent blemishes. With the Rare Earth Pore Minimizing Lotion, I apply it in areas where I tend to have enlarged pores, particularly the t zone. The amazonian clay that it’s formulated with helps reduce the appearance of pores as well as mattify the face where it gets oiliest.

Night: Because the skin is more prone to absorbing products at nighttime, I can use a heavier cream to moisturize my skins surface without the fear of getting super oily. The product I use is Pur Minerals Mineral Moisture Complex. This product has unfortunately been discontinued, but you just need to look for a thicker cream formulated with replenishing ingredients like vitamins and antioxidants. A similar one I recommend is the Philosophy Hope in a Jar Night Cream. Sometimes, I also like to mix in a little facial oil in with my moisturizer at nighttime to further soften the skin. My favorite to use is Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil.

7. Lip Care.

Just like the rest of the skin on your face, your lips need to be treated and cared for. In order to replenish dry, chapped lips and promote a plump pout, it is essential to apply a lip balm. Fuller lips are more youthful and let’s be honest, pouty, hydrated lips are sexy!

All Day: Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a lip balm fanatic. I’ve basically tried every brand and every variation, and have many favorites. However, the one I’m currently using is the EOS Lip Balm. This one is incredibly smoothing and absorbs easily into the skin without giving you that gunky, slimy feeling over your lips. Apply as needed throughout your whole day.

8. WATER WATER WATER.

When our skin is dehydrated, it will appear dull, tired, and will be more prone to acne, signs of aging, and basically every skin ailment. The secret to having beautiful skin is to constantly drink water through your day to keep your skin hydrated an glowing. Also, when your skin is properly hydrated, it is more prone to absorbing essential ingredients in your skin care. Your skin care products do an okay job alone of improving your skin’s health, but if you want truly beautiful Victoria’s Secret model skin, you need to constantly drink water. The easiest way to make yourself drink water is just to carry around a reusable water bottle. Everytime it goes empty, just fill it up at the nearest water fountain and by the end of the day you’ll have gotten your daily allowance.

All Day: Just do it. *Nike*

*Bonus* Primer.

Make up primers are traditionally used to prep the skin for foundation and other face make up products. Primers will not add any coverage and look very natural, so I have found they work extremely well on my bare skin by promoting its overall appearance.. By picking a primer to target your skin’s issue, you can instantly perfect issues like redness, dullness, large pores, oiliness, uneven skin tone, etc.

Morning Only: It is extremely unnecessary to use as many primers as I do (4), but I have found this combination works perfectly with my skin type. Because I have a lot of redness and pink undertones, I use a green primer to reduce this. Green is essentially the opposite of red on the color wheel, so by using the Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Adjust Primer all over my face I can cancel the two colors out and create an even skin tone. However, be careful not to apply too much of this or you could end up with a green cast over your face. (A yellow primer like Bare Minerals Prime Time is also great for reducing redness and evening skin tone). I also have quite oily skin with the appearance of large pores, so I use a combination of NYX Shine Killer and Pore Filler primer, applying them in my t zone. The Shine Killer is a silicone based formula that helps keep the face matte and fresh looking, while the thick texture of the Pore Filler fills in my pores and any other fine lines on my face. Lastly, because I use so many products to keep my face from getting oily, it can sometimes appear flat. To mimic the appearance of glowing skin, I use L’Oreal Magic Lumi Primer on the high points of my face (the tops of my cheeks, above the brow, bridge of the nose, and cupid’s bow) where light would naturally hit it. This primer is extremely light reflective and gives a really natural, lit from within look. However, unless you’re using this product underneath make up, I do not recommend applying it to the entirety of your face, because otherwise you’ll look like a metallic mess.

Tip: If you have quite dull skin that looks like it has a gray overcast, a purple primer is great for brightening your skin’s appearance!

Remember that I may have a different skin type from you and my favorite products may not work for you the same way they do for me. I highly recommend them, but before you go out and drop a lot of money on them do some research on what products are best for your skin’s issue and develop a skin care routine that’s best suited for you! Remember that developing a great skin care routine is a lot of trial and error; you will love products and you will hate some. But don’t get discouraged because once you find the perfect combination, you’ll find the appearance of your skin drastically changing, given you are consistent with the routine. It took me years to perfect my routine, but it has been so worth the result! I hope my tips and beauty secrets have helped!
